Evaluation Process and Team Selection
Our evaluation process is partially completed. With this being our inaugural season, we are learning as we go. Tryouts and Evaluations are always a difficult process to define and complete. We wanted to share some of our process's with you as we have had some inquiries.
The Surge Committee prior to Tryouts worked out how teams would be evaluated. Below is an overview of how we are watching, evaluating and scoring our players competing for team spots.
Step 1: Coaching selections: Team Surge created a coaches committee to intake, review, interview all coaches applications. After these items were completed, recommendations were brought back to our executive committee for voting by our 12 members who represent our feeder associations. This we felt was our greatest tool to represent our new association. We look to select the best available coach based on skills, experience, and attitude.
Step 2: Evaluation Process: Our competition/tryout committee worked on an evaluation process, containing a three vote system. We have worked on having third party evaluators come to review the players independently of the coaching staff. These individuals were to group the players in Top, Middle, and Bottom group, then select any bubble players that were very close to our teams. Team staffs and coaches then were asked to do the same grouping method. One vote was given to Coaches, One vote was given to the evaluators for team selection. If a the votes were split, the third vote was given to break the tie by the tryout committee. For parents that were selected to coach, the voting system is pivoted to a two vote system, where the evaluators have one vote, and the competition/tryout committee has the other, both must agree to select a player who's parent is the head coach.
We understand this can be stressful for players and families. Often times selections in minor hockey are very close, expanding outside of just skills and abilities. For instance a player may be one of the best 15, but depending on position, they may be left off the team in favor of balancing the roster between forwards and defense. Goalies, also a challenge, a coach may have experience around what they feel is the best fit for their team or league, selecting a style of goalie that suits that narrative. We empower our coaches to make team selections, while providing as much objective information and feedback we can to them for selections. With the difficulties in finding volunteers, we feel feedback is best to come from the coaching staffs and executive where needed. Providing our evaluation sheets is a challenge, as many evaluators use and record differently, scrutinizing a rating or scoring at that level, without seeing all parameters is not beneficial.
Overall we enjoy and embrace our players and families passion, we try to match that with our evaluation process. Often having upwards for 4-6 people watching and evaluating the ice during our tryouts and exhibition games. At the end of the day, we are all volunteers, working to provide the best opportunity for players. We thank you for participating in a positive manner as we work towards our inaugural season.
