U12A Surge Win Regional Silver Stick
The U12A Southeast Surge travelled to Owen Sound this past weekend to complete in their regional silver stick for a spot in the International Silver Stick later this winter.   The weekend was packed with adversity with an action packed two come from behind wins on Sunday to bring home the championship.
The pool play started with a first match up of many this season against the formidable Midwest 49ers.   Midwest got up 2-0 and although the Surge pushed through out the 2nd and 3rd period they could not solve the 49er goalie and the game ended with the same 2-0 score.   This put the pressure on the rest of the weekend with no room for error.  Game 2 on Saturday morning the surge came out flying and carried the play from start to finish against the Centre Wellington Fusion resulting in a 4-0 score and a solid shutout by Rylan Koeslag.   This set up a winner move on game Saturday afternoon against the Orillia Terriers.   Saturday saw the Surge play their best two games of the year thus far dominating the entire game winning 6-0 with Darren Beyer posting a shutout.
Championship Sunday's are never easy and this day was no different as the surge struggled to find their A game on Sunday however their drive and motivation never waivered.  The St. Thomas Stars who finished first in their pool were the team's semi-final match up.   After two periods of play the Surge found themselves down 3-1.   Enter Chase Dasilva who scored two goals during the opening shift of the 3rd period to square the match.   This fired up the team who played a great third period however the Stars goalie was very solid leading to a 3-3 tie heading to over time.   The Surge kept their momentum during 4 on 4 overtime and Jaxson Stanley buried a rebound to send the team into a frenzy and a birth in the championship game against the 49ers who also won their semi-final over Guelph in OT.
The final game played at the Bayshore Community Centre vs the 49ers again saw the Surge have to deal with adversity as the 49ers opened the scoring early in the first period.  The surge tied the game on an amazing solo effort by Holden Macewen deking to the back hand on a breakaway after also weaving around their defence.  This only lasted 1 minute as the 49ers took a 2-1 lead before the end of the first period meaning the Surge had to dig deep again to come back.    As the game went on the Surge seemed to find their stride with Jase Berlett breaking it out of his own end and then feeding Stanley on a 2 on 1 who made no mistake tying the game at 2.  As the 3rd period played it started to feel like OT was a likely destination but then with 3 minutes left Rowan Buchanan stole the puck behind his own net and skated the length of the ice before passing to Stanley who again made no mistake giving the Surge a 3-2 lead.   Although the 49ers pushed hard the Surge locked down the rest of the game and the celebration was on!
The Surge now have a spot in the International Silver Stick in Newmarket Jan 15-19.   The boys perseverance through adversity was the theme on Sunday.   A total team effort and never give up attitude will serve them well this coming season.
