U12A Surge Win WOAA Championship
The U12A Southeast Surge took home the WOAA Championship and booked a spot in the OMHA Championship this past weekend. This season has proven to be a memorable one as the team finished the regular season with a 23-1-1 record while also winning both their regional and international silver stick titles. The team also recently won the Josh Bailey Classic in Clarington.
The playoffs started with pool play against the Southwest Admirals and Westcoast Whitecaps. The surge rolled through with a 5 and 1 record clinching 1st in the pool. This meant a semi final match up against the Tri-Centre Jr Attack who found out quickly the Surge were prepared and ready. Both games saw the Surge dominate resulting in 8-0 and 8-1 wins. The other semi final saw the Admirals and 49ers needing a game 3 overtime to decide the series with the 49ers coming out on top.
Game 1 of the Finals in Palmerston vs the 49ers was a battle from start to finish. Both teams had their turn owning the play in the first two periods. An early first period goal from Jaxson Stanley set up by Jase Berlett and Darren Beyer standing strong in the net had the game tied at 1 after two periods. During the flood break the Surge regrouped and came out flying in the 3rd period and took the game over like they have in so many big games this season. 5 min into the 3rd period Chase Dasilva and Hunter Adamson scored 11 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead. An empty net goal sealed a 4-1 win.
Game 2 in Hanover Sunday afternoon had the Surge 1 win away from the title. The Surge owned the first period but couldn't solve the 49ers goalie resulting in a scoreless game through 1 period. A power play that carried over from the 1st period saw Landon Currie make a nice pass to Stanley who made no mistake with a one timer into the net. After the 49ers tied it Rowan Buchanan jumped on a puck and went bar down restoring the 2 goal lead. Again the 49ers were quick in tying the game. Another power play opportunity saw Corbin Holliday with a great screen in front of the 49ers net which resulted in Stanley jumping on a rebound to again restore a 3-2 lead. After the flood early in the 3rd period Jase Berlett picked off a 49ers pass weaved his way into the zone and roofed a wrist shot to extend the lead to 4-2. The 49ers would not go away though and a PP goal of their own with 7 minutes left closed the game to 4-3. The Surge continued to play their game and with 3:30 left Stanley won a race to the puck against the two 49ers D and restored the 2 goal lead. Rylan Koeslag with some big saves in the 3rd period secured the win for the Surge.
The Surge are now heading to Whitby April 3-5 to take a run at an OMHA Championship and get that elusive red hat. Keep it going boys!!
